Northwest Iowa robbery story turns out to be fake


ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa - A man who previously reported being the victim of a roadside robbery in Lyon County, Iowa, now says he made the story up.

According to the Lyon County Sheriff's Office, Aaron Abels is charged with two counts of false reporting, both serious misdemeanors. Abels confessed and is free after posting $1,000 bond.

ST. PAUL (AP) - New legislative district maps in Minnesota pit 46 incumbents against each other and create 23 open seats.

The new House maps released Tuesday pair 30 incumbents against each other and create 15 open seats. New Senate maps pit 16 incumbents against each other and create eight open seats.

Winter crops day & small grains tour in Slayton Thursday


SLAYTON - The University of Minnesota Winter Crops Day and Small Grains Tour will be held at the Slayton Pizza Ranch on Thursday, Feb. 23.

Iowa Senate panel votes to legalize Internet poker


DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A Senate subcommittee has voted to legalize Internet poker in Iowa, sending the measure to a full committee for debate.

Supporters say residents already gamble online and the state doesn't get any revenue and there are no regulations. The measure would allow Iowa casinos and racetracks to offer Internet poker, and put state gaming regulators in charge.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A majority of those who responded in a recent poll favor legislative efforts to cut commercial property taxes.

According to the latest Iowa Poll from the Des Moines Register, 28 percent of those polled opposed the idea.

ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa - The Lyon County Sheriff's Office is investigating a robbery that took place early Monday west of Larchwood.

The incident occurred around 1:25 a.m. on county road A-18 near Arthur Avenue.

Altercation led deputy to shoot armed man



WARD, S.D. (AP) - An altercation between two Minnesota men led to a short vehicle pursuit that ended when a Moody County sheriff's deputy shot one of the men.

Attorney General Marty Jackley says Deputy Nathan Bowden fired his duty weapon and struck 59-year-old Robert Alan Nosbusch, who was armed with a 45 caliber pistol.

USD professor creating structures for life on moon

TEA, S.D. - Officials with the Lewis & Clark Regional Water System say a $4.5 million allocation in the FY13 budget is a welcome improvement over previous proposed funding of $493,000.

Edgerton resident killed in Nobles County crash


An Edgerton resident died in a two-vehicle accident Thursday on Highway 91, north of Adrian.

The victim is identified as 51-year-old Curtis D. Jensen.

According to the State Patrol, Jensen was driving a Ford Taurus northbound on Highway 91, while 26-year-old Kirk Bleyenburg, also of Edgerton, was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee southbound in the northbound lane and struck Jensen's vehicle

SAPULPA, Okla. (AP) - Luverne native Andy Gabrielson, a storm chaser featured on The Weather Channel, was killed in a head-on collision in northeastern Oklahoma Saturday.

Two people died in the accident on the Turner Turnpike. It happened when a vehicle driving west in the eastbound lanes of the highway collided with another vehicle near U.S. Highway 66.

Southwest Minn. man charged for shooting cougar


The Jackson County Attorney’s Office has charged a southwest Minnesota resident with allegedly shooting a cougar last fall.

Daniel Hamman, 26, was cited with shooting a protected animal on Nov. 27.

Program pays landowners to allow public hunting on their land


Landowners in 21 southwestern Minnesota counties can earn money by allowing public hunting on their private land through the Walk-In Access program.

MANKATO - A search warrant filed in Blue Earth County Court Friday contains allegations that a Rock County Sheriff’s Deputy received nude photos of a teenage girl on his department issued cell phone and had sex with the teen.

The search warrant asked Cellco Partnership, doing business as Verizon Wireless, for data from the cell phone of Deputy Kyle Kreun.

ST. PAUL - Gov. Mark Dayton has announced the appointment of Gordon Moore and Terry Vajgrt as District Court Judges in the Fifth Judicial District.

Shopko and Pamida have announced plans to merge, ultimately creating a retail company with nearly 350 stores in 22 states.

FBI identifies Brewster bank robbery suspect


Officials have identified the suspect in an armed robbery at the Rolling Hills Bank & Trust in Brewster late Tuesday morning.

Forty-nine-year-old Mark Edward Wetsch of Minneapolis was arrested Tuesday afternoon near St. Peter after he was spotted in the vehicle suspected of being used during the bank robbery in Brewster.

Jackson man receives 25 years for killing brother


A Jackson man was sentenced to 25 years in prison Tuesday for the June 2010 murder of his brother at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Lakefield.

A jury in Mankato found TyRon Collins guilty of two counts of second-degree murder on Oct. 28, 2011. Collins was sentenced for intentional second-degree murder, the more serious of the two offenses.
